She was the subject of a 2016 documentary, The 100 Years Show, and now, as she enters a new century of life, she continues to create new work from her home studio. Her artwork has been displayed at the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Lisson Gallery, among others. Undeterred by the art world’s refusal to acknowledge female artists, Carmen continued to create her singularly colorful abstract work, which was finally appreciated by the broader art community in the early 2000s. Facing rampant sexism in the art world, she was prohibited from entering exhibitions and was frequently rejected from shows because she was a woman. Born in Havana, Carmen trained as an architect before leaving Cuba for New York. Now, at the age of 106, she has taken the art world by storm with her bold minimalist works. Artist Carmen Herrera sold her first piece of artwork at the age of 89.
